YOUNGSTOWN — Kravitz Deli, 3135 Belmont Ave., and Kravitz's Garden Cafe, 123 McKinley Ave., will celebrate Rose Kravitz's birthday and the fifth annual Jewish Food Fest from Jan. 27 to Feb. 1.

Rose Kravitz opened the deli in 1939.

"My mom taught us the most important parts of running a family business, and we wouldn't be here without her," Jack Kravitz, president of Kravitz Delicatessen and youngest child of the founder, said in a news release. "I love that some of our employees are second generation family members of her employees. Makes me feel like we have her here with us every day."

Among the festivities:

  • Rose K XL sandwiches will be on sale for $12;
  • The Tongue Challenge – customers have the opportunity to try pickled beef tongue;
  • A special Birthday Brunch at the Garden Cafe at Mill Creek Park on Feb. 2.

An immigrant from what is now Croatia, many of Rose Kravitz's dishes have an Eastern European-Yiddish flair. Some of her favorites that will be back for the week include the traditional Kravitz Boiled Egg Bagel and the Chicken Mish Mosh Soup.
