Columbiana County reports spike in COVID-19 cases, no new deaths
LISBON — There are now 880 cases of COVID-19 in Columbiana County, according to a Tuesday release from the county health district.
A spike of 86 new cases since the district's most recent report Sunday is attributed to expanded testing at Federal Correctional Institution Elkton in Lisbon, which accounts for more than half of the county's total cases.
Of the county's total cases, 520 are FCI Elkton inmates and 71 are residents of long-term care facilities such as nursing homes, according to the release.
The district reported no new virus-related deaths Tuesday.
The county's figures include statistics from the cities of East Liverpool and Salem and FCI Elkton, a low-security facility that houses about 2,400 inmates.
As of Tuesday morning, the federal Bureau of Prisons reported 352 active cases of COVID-19 at the prison, including 345 cases among inmates and seven among staff — the second-highest number of cases in the federal prison system, behind a facility in Forrest City, Ark.
The bureau is also reporting a total nine inmate deaths, which is also the second-highest in the federal prison system, behind the Federal Medical Center in Fort Worth, Tx.
FCI Elkton's most recent death was reported May 8.
The bureau also reported 109 inmates and 46 employees have recovered from COVID-19.
