Ohio reporting 1,748 new COVID-19 cases; 88 new cases in the Valley
COLUMBUS — According to the latest figures today from the Ohio Department of Health, the state is reporting 826,149 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, or COVID-19, to date — 1,748 more than reported Wednesday, including 88 new cases in the Mahoning Valley.
Of the state's total cases, about 44,254 are presumed to be active infections.
The weekly volume of virus testing statewide has steadily decreased since late November. The average percent of positive tests continues a downward trend that began in early January.
So far this month, agencies statewide have administered an average 9,768 fewer tests per day than in January.
As a result of a data error at ODH, up to 4,000 COVID-19 deaths were not counted since October. The department is still reconciling its death data, according to a note on the state dashboard.
CASES, DEATHS AND HOSPITALIZATIONS
There have been 19,314 confirmed and probable cases to date in Mahoning County; 14,202 in Trumbull; and 8,077 in Columbiana. There have been 540 confirmed and probable deaths to date in Mahoning County; 458 in Trumbull; and 180 in Columbiana.
Since yesterday's report, there have been 32 new cases in Mahoning County; 31 in Trumbull; and 25 in Columbiana.
Mahoning County's 540 COVID-19 deaths is the eighth-highest among all Ohio's 88 counties, according to the state's COVID-19 dashboard, which presents confirmed cases, hospitalizations and deaths in each county.
Mahoning County has the 11th-highest number of cumulative cases in the state; Trumbull has the 17th-highest; and Columbiana has the 26th-highest.
Ohio is also reporting 136,255 "probable cases" statewide, which is an expanded case definition provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Statewide, 49,951 people have been hospitalized to date, 7,104 of whom were placed in intensive care units. There have also been 14,573 confirmed deaths to date, along with another 2,552 "probable deaths."
TESTING AND RECOVERY
So far this month, 703,663 coronavirus tests have been administered in Ohio, an average of about 30,594 per day. A total of 1,251,214 tests were administered in January, an average of about 40,362 per day.
The seven-day moving average for positive tests was 4 percent on Tuesday. That's far below the average 15 percent reported in early January, the most recent peak, but still above the all-time low of 3 percent reported in early October. That average percent peaked April 20 at 24 percent.
Statewide, 901,025 COVID-19 patients are presumed to have recovered from the virus. That includes 17,943 patients in Mahoning County; 13,114 in Trumbull; and 7,531 in Columbiana. That metric is measured as the number of COVID-19 patients whose symptoms reportedly began more than 21 days ago but who have not died.
As of today, 1,539,823 doses of the coronavirus vaccine have been administered in Ohio, including 35,521 in Mahoning County, 26,266 in Trumbull and 13,288 in Columbiana. Statewide, 30,743 more people have received at least their first dose of the vaccine since Wednesday.
