Ohio reporting 852 new COVID-19 cases; 91 new cases in the Valley

COLUMBUS — According to the latest figures today from the Ohio Department of Health, the state is reporting 830,282 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, or COVID-19, to date — 852 more than reported Sunday, including 91 new cases in the Mahoning Valley.

Of the state's total cases, about 40,054 are presumed to be active infections.

The weekly volume of virus testing statewide has steadily decreased since late November. The average percent of positive tests continues a downward trend that began in early January.

So far this month, agencies statewide have administered an average 8,562 fewer tests per day than in January.

CASES, DEATHS AND HOSPITALIZATIONS

There have been 19,444 confirmed and probable cases to date in Mahoning County; 14,315 in Trumbull; and 8,120 in Columbiana. There have been 544 confirmed and probable deaths to date in Mahoning County; 465 in Trumbull; and 183 in Columbiana.

Since yesterday's report, there have been 42 new cases in Mahoning County; 32 in Trumbull; and 17 in Columbiana.

Mahoning County's 544 COVID-19 deaths is the eighth-highest among all Ohio's 88 counties, according to the state's COVID-19 dashboard, which presents confirmed cases, hospitalizations and deaths in each county.

Mahoning County has the 11th-highest number of cumulative cases in the state; Trumbull has the 17th-highest; and Columbiana has the 27th-highest.

Ohio is also reporting 138,592 "probable cases" statewide, which is an expanded case definition provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Statewide, 50,382 people have been hospitalized to date, 7,148 of whom were placed in intensive care units. There have also been 14,752 confirmed deaths to date, along with another 2,594 "probable deaths".

TESTING AND RECOVERY

So far this month, 858,592 coronavirus tests have been administered in Ohio, an average of about 31,800 per day. A total of 1,251,214 tests were administered in January, an average of about 40,362 per day.

The seven-day moving average for positive tests was 4 percent on Saturday. That's far below the average 15 percent reported in early January, the most recent peak, but still above the all-time low of 3 percent reported in early October. That average percent peaked April 20 at 24 percent.

Statewide, 911,474 COVID-19 patients are presumed to have recovered from the virus. That includes 18,133 patients in Mahoning County; 13,266 in Trumbull; and 7,598 in Columbiana. That metric is measured as the number of COVID-19 patients whose symptoms reportedly began more than 21 days ago but who have not died.

As of today, 1,687,834 doses of the coronavirus vaccine have been administered in Ohio, including 39,264 in Mahoning County, 39,037 in Trumbull and 14,376 in Columbiana. Statewide, 32,997 more people have received at least their first dose of the vaccine since Sunday.
