GIRARD — James W. Thomas, 84, passed away on Friday (Dec. 18) at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown.

Jim was born on Feb. 23, 1936 in Youngstown, the son of W. Wendell and Marion R. (Howells) Thomas.

Jim was a 1953 graduate of Girard High School and had attended Westminster College.

He graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and obtained a Juris Doctorate from Ohio Northern University of Law.

Jim had a private law practice for more than 60 years and was still engaged in private practice at the time of his death.

He had been a member of the Girard-Liberty Kiwanis; William Farr Masonic Lodge #672; Warren Elks; Board of Trustees of Ohio Motorist (AAA)-Cleveland; Secretary of Treasurer of Ohio Bar Title Insurance Company, Columbus; Youngstown Country Club; member of Board of Trustees of The United Methodist Community Center; Past President of Girard City Board of Education; Trumbull County, Ohio State, and American Bar Association; and the Girard First United Methodist Church.

He was an avid Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns fan, and enjoyed spending quality time with his family.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 61 years, Susan (Carnahan) Thomas, whom he married on Sept. 5, 1959; his daughters, Karen E. Thomas of Minneola, Fla., and Nancy L. (Mark) Thomas Standohar of Girard; a sister, Meribeth Thomas Miller of Girard; and grandchildren Caroline (Joe) Iammarino, Evan Standohar, Mark Standohar, Radley Thomas and Sloan Thomas.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests any memorial contributions be made to The United Way, Salvation Army or Girard First United Methodist Church memorial fund.
