Moment Rottweiler Fighting Cancer Reunites With Bestie After Leg Amputation
The adorable moment a rottweiler fighting cancer got to reunite with his friend after amputation surgery has melted hearts, showing that besties really do come in all shapes and sizes.
Dog owner Isabella Omar, 20, captured the precious moment her five-year-old rottweiler, named Zeus, finally got to see his tiny best friend, Sparky, after six weeks apart. Zeus was diagnosed with an aggressive form of osteosarcoma in February after a tumor was discovered in his front left leg.
The family was devastated by the news, as Omar, of Chicago, Illinois, told Newsweek that it felt like their "world was coming down." Action had to be taken swiftly, so they opted for a full amputation of the front leg followed by chemotherapy, which will hopefully give Zeus a life expectancy of around 12 to 18 months.
"Zeus is about 155 pounds, so doctors said this would be a risk because dogs carry most of their weight on the front side," Omar said. "But Zeus is so incredibly strong, and we had so much faith in him after two ACL surgeries at the age of three (and surgery in his shoulder because of calcification at the age of four). We know there's nothing he can't get through."
Following the amputation on March 17, Zeus's recovery was slow and incredibly difficult at times. Omar said the first few days "were the toughest," but Zeus's strength and ability gradually increased.
By early April, he was finally ready to reunite with his Yorkshire Terrier best friend named Sparky. In the past, Zeus and Sparky would see each other every Sunday when Omar's family visited her grandparents, but this marked one of the longest periods the dogs were apart.
Zeus may look a little different now, but Sparky was so excited to see him (and the feeling was mutual). Omar captured footage of the moment Zeus lay in the corridor, waiting for Sparky to come running towards him. She shared the heartwarming moment on Zeus's dedicated TikTok account (@theycallmezeusss) and it has delighted viewers, generating over 656,500 views and more than 163,200 likes at the time of writing.
Omar continued: "Zeus hadn't seen sparky in six weeks, but after a dreadful period, he was finally better. He could walk again and play with his best friend like he used to.
"There is a massive size difference between them, but it's adorable how they always sit next to each other and lick each other, or Sparky would run after Zeus (who borrowed his tiny toys). They can never eat next to each other because Zeus swallows his food in 10 seconds, meanwhile Sparky is a slow eater, so Zeus would push him out the way and eat his meal in one."
Zeus is undergoing chemotherapy and has regular bloodwork taken, which he's not so keen on. Omar has also set up a GoFundMe to help cover the costs of his treatment and they have also in the process of getting Zeus a prosthetic leg. The family is desperate to get as much time as they can with Zeus, as Omar told Newsweek that they're "willing to give all [they] have."
This ongoing cancer battle certainly hasn't broken Zeus's spirit, and there's hope that he will get to make many more memories with Sparky in the months to come.
Omar has been blown away by the online response to the viral TikTok video. The outpouring of support has instilled her faith that things will work out.
"To any pet owner going through similar, do not give up because every dog is different and special. All they need is your love, strength and support. I hope this story brings light and peace of mind because who'd have thought that my 155-pound Rottweiler would be able to walk on three legs? If he can do it, so can your furry baby," Omar told Newsweek.
Many TikTok users took to the comments to praise the interaction between Zeus and Sparky, leading to more than 300 responses on the video so far.
One comment reads: "this is the best reunion ever."
Another TikTok user wrote: "Dogs never feel sorry for themselves do they? So beautiful."
While another person added: "I know I look different but I'm still your friend!"
