Dachshund Has Surprise Encounter With Frog, Her Reaction Is Everything
Dachshunds and frogs aren't a typical combination-and a hilarious TikTok video that's gone viral has shown exactly why.
TikTok user @helloitsmeheather took to social media earlier this month to share an amusing clip capturing the moment her dachshund encountered a frog for the very first time. The small dog appeared visibly unsure what to make of the tiny creature, initially sniffing before attempting to nibble and lick it-an interaction she almost instantly regretted.
Footage shows the dachshund's reaction change within seconds, as she bares her teeth, pulls back, and shakes her head in apparent disgust. It quickly becomes clear that getting too close to the frog was not the right call, and the dog seems thoroughly unimpressed by the unexpected taste.
Internet users are obsessed with the pup's over-the-top response. The TikTok caption jokes: "I guess it didn't taste good." Since being posted, the clip has gone viral, racking up more than 8.8 million views and over 1.2 million likes on TikTok at the time of writing.
Newsweek has contacted @helloitsmeheather via TikTok for comment. The details of the video could not be verified.
Social media users have continued to laud the dachshund's chaotic reaction to her questionable new friend. Following the overwhelming response online, the dog's owner later shared a slow-motion version of the clip, allowing viewers to fully appreciate every grimace and head shake.
While the moment was entertaining, experts say encounters between dogs and frogs are something pet owners should take seriously. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), some frogs and toads secrete toxins through their skin as a defense mechanism, which can cause irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, or more serious symptoms if a dog mouths or licks them.
The ASPCA also warns that dogs exposed to certain amphibians-particularly toads-may experience oral pain, pawing at the face, and in severe cases, neurological symptoms requiring immediate veterinary treatment. Even frogs that are not highly toxic can produce unpleasant-tasting secretions that prompt reactions like the one seen in the viral video.
Veterinary experts advise owners to rinse a dog's mouth gently with running water if their pet has mouthed a frog or toad and to seek veterinary advice if any symptoms persist. Preventing repeat encounters by supervising dogs outdoors, especially near ponds or damp areas, is also recommended.
In the days since the clip was shared online, it has amassed more than 22,900 comments, with viewers fixating on the disproportion between the dachshund's dramatic reaction and the frog's total lack of concern.
One comment reads: "That poor baby went through all the emojis."
Another TikTok user wrote: "Dude expressed every emotion in existence in under two seconds."
A third added: "Never seen a dog make so many expressions of disgust before."
Meanwhile, one commenter joked: "Love how the frog just doesn't care."
While the dachshund may not have enjoyed her first-and likely last-frog encounter, her expressive response has left millions of viewers laughing, turning an ordinary backyard moment into viral internet gold.
