Thrifter Buys ‘Coolest Find of All Time'-Realizes Mistake Once Back at Car
A routine trip to Goodwill turned into an internet spectacle after a thrifter realized their triumphant $34.99 artwork purchase was far too large to fit inside their car.
The mishap, shared to Reddit on April 19, quickly went viral after images showed the oversized piece strapped to the roof of a mid‑size vehicle-sparked by a simple miscalculation that thousands of viewers found instantly relatable.
The post, shared by u/Henrique_Lucas, has received more than 12,000 upvotes, drawing amused reactions from viewers who followed the artwork's unconventional journey from thrift store to home. The images show a large, aesthetically striking framed artwork leaning against the rear of the mid‑size car, visibly dwarfing the vehicle's boot, despite its otherwise practical size.
In text accompanying the images, the thrift-store shopper detailed how what began as an errand for a friend quickly became an unexpected haul.
“My coolest find of all time, lack of space in the car couldn't stop me,” the poster wrote. “Went to goodwill to help my buddy look for a bedside table and went to the checkout immediately after finding this.”
Only after reaching the car did the reality set in.
“In my excitement I mis-measured, and it didn't fit in the outback,” the shopper said, describing the moment they realized the piece was far too large to transport conventionally.
Rather than walk away from the purchase, the buyer improvised. According to the post, the artwork was secured to the roof using rug ties, and the driver made the journey home cautiously-holding the piece in place through an open sunroof. The unusual transportation method quickly became a focal point of the post, with Reddit commenters praising the dedication and joking about the lengths people will go to for a great thrift‑store find.
Another image in the post shows the artwork finally displayed on a wall inside the creator's home, proof that the effort paid off. But the ordeal did not end once it made it indoors.
“I painstakingly vacuumed it after I got home because it made my allergies go crazy,” the shopper wrote, adding that the cleaning process was extensive before the piece could be installed.
“But I've finally gotten it set up in my room. $34.99 well spent,” they added.
Despite attempts to identify the artwork's origins, the buyer was unable to uncover any information about the piece.
“I've done my best to look for info online about the piece, but to no avail. No information on the back either,” they said.
Still, the mystery did little to dampen their enthusiasm. “Regardless of where it's from, I adore it,” the shopper added.
The post also revealed that the painting was only part of a larger thrifting success that day. As a bonus detail that further amused Reddit users, the shopper shared that they also picked up a lamp, a media console and what they described as a “child with injured foot thing”-all marked down 50 percent with red tags.
Practical fixes were budget‑friendly too, the poster noted: “And cinderblocks are only $1.78 at Home Depot.”
