University of Pittsburgh launches tuition-free program at regional campuses for eligible students

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – A new University of Pittsburgh program for regional campuses, including in Johnstown, will cover tuition costs for eligible Pennsylvania residents starting with the fall 2026 term.

"The Pitt Regional Campus Tuition Pledge reflects our deep commitment to the students attending our regional campuses," Pitt Chancellor Joan Gabel said in a statement. "Students in Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown, Titusville and across Pennsylvania deserve affordable access to a University of Pittsburgh education, and this program is our direct investment in making that a reality while strengthening the communities our regional campuses serve."

Eligible students are those whose household adjusted gross income is $75,000 or less. Those students will pay nothing in tuition at Pitt-Bradford, Greensburg and Johnstown campuses, as well as those at the nursing program in Titusville.

"Pitt covers whatever tuition remains after all federal, state and institutional aid has been applied," a release said.

The program works as a last-dollar benefit. That means federal, state and institutional aid is applied first, and whatever is left will be covered.

According to Pitt-Johnstown's website, the per-term cost for in-state students is $6,898 as of the 2025-26 academic year. Textbooks, food, housing and other fees are not covered by the tuition pledge.

The only requirement to apply, aside from being a commonwealth resident, is that students must have filled out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Pitt said the program applies to new and enrolled students at the regional campuses, and added that it benefits access and affordability to post-secondary education.

"Pitt's regional campuses serve students across western and central Pennsylvania, many of whom are first-generation college students, Pell Grant recipients, and community members with deep ties to their regions," the release said. "The Pitt Regional Campus Tuition Pledge is designed to meet these students where they are – combining the value of a full Pitt education close to home with the financial certainty needed to start and complete a degree."

Pennsylvania Highlands Community College also launched a last-dollar program in April for Cambria County students.

Starting with the 2026 term, recent Cambria County high school graduates can apply to have their first year of tuition at the college be paid through the new Smart Start Promise Program. That means all tuition and comprehensive fees for up to 30 college credits are covered during a student's first year.
