Look: 'Book of Mormon' canceled through May 17 due to fire

May 7 (UPI) -- The producers of The Book of Mormon have announced that performances of the Tony-winning musical have been canceled through May 17 because of a fire at Broadway's Eugene O'Neill Theatre.

The three-alarm-blaze happened Monday morning on a day when there was no performance scheduled.

Tuesday's and Wednesday's shows were subsequently canceled, but the closure was extended by more than a week on Wednesday.

"ATG Entertainment and The Book of Mormon extend their deepest thanks to the firefighters and emergency responders for their bravery and speedy response. The fire was limited to the follow spot booth of the O'Neill," the producers said in a statement Wednesday.

"At this time, the exact cause of the fire is unknown. ATG Entertainment and The Book of Mormon are currently working with a team of industry professionals to begin repairs needed to the building."

Created by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone, the musical has been seen by nearly 6 million people at the theater since it opened on Broadway 15 years ago.

The original Broadway cast featured Josh Gad, Andrew Rannells, Rory O'Malley and Nikki M. James.
