Fifty-nine years ago, Dolly Parton was still carving out her place in country music. But one playful single hinted at the star she was about to become.

On May 8, 1967, Parton, 80, released "Something Fishy" from her debut album, Hello, I'm Dolly. The cheeky, story-driven track would go on to become her first Top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, peaking at No. 17.

The song introduced listeners to the wit, charm and storytelling that would define Parton's career for decades to come.

At the time, Parton was still a rising artist, working to establish herself in a competitive country music landscape. But "Something Fishy" showed early signs of the sharp lyrics, memorable hooks and a strong sense of personality that sets Parton apart from the rest of the country music world.

The song has been ranked fourth out of the 12-track album, with "smart aleck" lyrics that could have been the ultimate answer song to Brad Paisley's 2002 release "I'm Gonna Miss Her (The Fishin' Song)."

The milestone also came during a pivotal year. In September 1967, Parton joined Porter Wagoner's television show, a move that would bring her national exposure and help launch her into the spotlight.

Looking back, "Something Fishy" and the entire Hello, I'm Dolly album as a whole marked the beginning of a career that would go on to reshape country music. In 2024, Parton announced plans for the Broadway musical Hello, I'm Dolly.

"You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll clap, you'll stomp, it truly is a Grand Ol' Opera," Parton promised in a statement. "Pun and fun intended"- just like the original album set out to do.
