20 Years After Her Debut, This Soap Legend Is About to Face Her 'Most Challenging' Storyline Yet
As Diane Parish is set to celebrate her 20th anniversary with EastEnders, the soap opera has announced her most challenging storyline yet.
The official EastEnders Facebook page announced that the BBC Soap opera has partnered with Blood Cancer UK on a new storyline which will see Denise Fox (Parish) diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a form of blood cancer.
The storyline, starting later this month, follows Denise's diagnosis of leukemia after her unexplained tiredness.
The story will unfold throughout 2026, focusing on Denise and her loved ones as they cope with the diagnosis.
The soap has been working closely with Blood Cancer UK to ensure that the storyline is portrayed as sensitively and accurately as possible.
Speaking on the storyline, EastEnders Executive Producer, Ben Wadey, shared, "It was vital to us that Denise's storyline is portrayed with sensitivity and care, and we're grateful to Blood Cancer UK for their advice in helping us tell this story accurately."
The show runner added, "As viewers follow Denise, we hope to shine a light on the realities and challenges of an acute myeloid leukaemia diagnosis and the impact it has on the person affected and those around them."
CEO of Blood Cancer UK Helen Rowntree shared, "It's been a privilege advising the EastEnders team to ensure Denise's storyline reflects the real experiences of people living with blood cancer and those who care for them."
Rowntree went on to say, "Blood cancers, which include leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, do not discriminate, yet experiences and outcomes can vary significantly, including by ethnicity. Being Black and living with an aggressive blood cancer like acute myeloid leukaemia can bring additional challenges. We hope viewers gain a greater understanding of blood cancer's impact, and we're pleased this issue is being highlighted on a powerful platform, helping make a ‘hidden' cancer more visible.
Parish originally joined the cast of EastEnders on May 11, 2006, and has since been involved in some of the soap's most talked-about storylines. Fans will have to tune in to see how Denise handles this latest storyline development in the coming episodes.
EastEnders streams Monday through Thursday on BritBox.
