Look inside the Lancaster Twp. greenhouses growing award-winning orchids [photos]
May 8-Inside eight Lancaster Township greenhouses, orchids bloom in shades ranging from deep fuchsia to yellow to white with pink freckles.
Little Brook Orchids, 25 Rider Ave. in Lancaster, has roots dating back to 1989 when owner John F. Pyfer Jr. began collecting and growing orchids in his home greenhouse. In 2002, he purchased the greenhouse complex where his business now resides, and these days, his son, Trey Pyfer, manages the day-to-day growing and selling operations. (It's a true family affair, as John's wife, Carol Pyfer, does the bookkeeping.)
The Pyfers know their orchids. Earlier this spring, they entered 15 plants at the 2026 Southeastern Pennsylvania Orchid Society show in Oaks, Montgomery County, and came home with a whopping eight blue ribbons, four Best of Show rosettes and five commendations from the American Orchid Society.
In addition to selling the graceful plants and supplies to care for them, Little Brook Orchids offers services like boarding for plants while their owners are away; repotting orchids and other household plants; and providing on-site seminars about orchids for garden clubs and other groups.
