Former Sharon clinic manager gets prison term for fraud

A former facilities manager in Mercer County has been sentenced in federal court to 30 months in prison for money laundering, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and other charges related to schemes to defraud a nonprofit health care clinic.

U.S. District Court Judge J. Nicholas Ranjan sentenced Mark Marriott, 59, of Sharpsville, for his part in schemes to defraud Sharon-based Primary Health Network between 2011 and 2019.

Marriott was among six men charged with defrauding the federally qualified health system of more than $2 million by billing for services through vendors for work that was never done.

Marriott also was charged with failing to report some of the money he pocketed from the schemes on his federal tax returns.

Two of Marriott's co-conspirators, PHN's former CEOs Drew Pierce and Jack Laeng, were each sentenced in April, with 40 months of imprisonment for Pierce and 24 months for Laeng.

Federal prosecutors said the men used contracts, middlemen and paperwork to conceal the fraud, which included kickback payments.
