Why Megan Moroney Skipped the 2026 ACM Awards for Her Best Friend
Country fans tuning in to the 2026 Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday night couldn’t help but notice one very big name missing from the front row at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Megan Moroney, the 28-year-old rising star who led the entire field with nine nominations, was nowhere to be found. And once you hear the sweet reason why, you’ll love her even more.
A best friend’s wedding came first
Instead of slipping into a designer gown and walking the red carpet, Moroney was halfway across the world in a comfy two-piece loungewear set, getting ready to help her best friend say “I do.”
“I’m so honored to be nominated tonight at @ACMAwards & I’m rooting on all my friends from afar!” Moroney shared on her Instagram Story on Sunday, May 17, according to Us Weekly. “I’m out of the country this week on MOH [maid of honor] duty to get my bestie married @Inatalieking.”
If the name Natalie King rings a bell for longtime Moroney fans, that’s because it should. Natalie is the very same best friend Megan wrote about in her tender 2021 song “Wonder”—a track that captured the kind of deep, lifelong female friendship so many of us treasure. The fact that Megan chose to stand beside Natalie on her wedding day rather than chase a trophy in Las Vegas says everything about the woman behind the music.
“I love you guys & can’t wait to see y’all in Columbus!” she added, giving a nod to her sold-out tour stop on May 29. “Counting down the days.”
Shania Twain shared the sweet news from the stage
Host Shania Twain, 60, made sure Moroney’s absence didn’t go unnoticed—and she did it with all the warmth country music is known for. Mid-show, the legendary “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” singer paused to explain to viewers exactly where one of the night’s biggest nominees had gone.
“Country music has the power to bring people together, to help people improve and heal lives, so it’s only right that ACM Lifting Lives supports great causes like St. Jude Children’s Hospital,” Twain told the audience. “Megan Moroney, one of country music’s newest superstars, couldn’t be here tonight but for a really beautiful reason. She’s busy being the bridesmaid of honor at her best friend’s wedding. However, Megan still sent us this very special message on this very important cause.”
It was a touching moment—one country icon making space to honor another, even in her absence.
A pretaped message for a cause close to her heart
Right on cue, Moroney appeared on the big screen wearing a St. Jude Music Gives T-shirt, smiling that familiar Georgia-girl smile and asking fans at home to lend their support.
“I wish I could be there tonight,” she said, before praising the staff at St. Jude Children’s Hospital for their “life-changing and life-saving work.”
“Let’s all band together to help St. Jude beat childhood cancer,” she added, holding up the shirt, which is available online. “Please get yours and twin with me.”
It was the kind of moment that reminded viewers why country music keeps drawing in new generations of fans. The genre has always been rooted in faith, family and the kind of small-town values that put loved ones and big-hearted causes ahead of personal glory—and Moroney embodies all of it.
Nine nominations and a tour about to take off
Don’t feel too sorry for Megan, though. Even from afar, she was the night’s biggest story. Her nine nominations included two of the most coveted categories of the evening: Entertainer of the Year and Female Artist of the Year. Not bad for a singer who’s still in the early chapters of what looks like a remarkable career.
And she’s not slowing down for a second. Her highly anticipated Cloud 9 Tour kicks off May 29—the same Columbus, Ohio, date she mentioned in her Instagram message to fans.
“Rehearsals are complete ,” she posted on Instagram on May 12. “17 days until opening night! which means u have 17 days to learn a new song! swipe for a surprise ;).”
That little tease has fans buzzing about what new music might be coming their way, and ticket holders are already dusting off their boots and prepping their playlists.
The kind of star country music needs
In a year when so much in entertainment feels manufactured, there’s something deeply refreshing about a young country star skipping the biggest night of her career to be a maid of honor. Megan Moroney could have flown back, hit the red carpet and still made it to Natalie’s wedding. Instead, she chose presence over publicity—and she did it with grace.
For fans who missed the show, the 2026 ACM Awards are streaming on Prime Video.
