3 Movies to Watch on Memorial Day

Memorial Day isn't just a day off from school or work. It's a time to celebrate the people who gave their lives for the American people and bravely stood up for ideals that often are overlooked in our country.

Hollywood certainly doesn't shy away from creating movies that focus on war, soldiers, America, and all other forms of patriotism. These are the best movies to watch on Memorial Day if you want to feel more connected to your country and the men and women who sacrifice for it, not just on the holiday, but every day.

Saving Private Ryan (1998)

This famous Tom Hanks movie isn't for the faint of heart. The detailed violence and realistic portrayal of war were among the most revolutionary in the film industry at the turn of the 21st century. As far as the plot goes, it's an inspiring account of a group of soldiers searching for their friend and compatriot in the intensity of World War II's Normandy invasions. Stephen Spielberg and Hanks' collaborative skills have never been better than here.

Good Morning, Vietnam (1987)

Robin Williams brings levity to a terrible situation in a film that follows a DJ who reads the news and plays music with a sense of humor as a wartime disc jockey. The movie shows the lengths soldiers must go to when they cope with the violence and destruction of war, and how they come together to find the light in the darkness.

Glory (1989)

Set during the Civil War, this film starring Matthew Broderick and Denzel Washington features the incredible story of the first all-Black infantry unit in the history of the country. Discussion on race relations, slavery, and more makes this a must-see in schools and homes alike for its patriotic spirit. Incredible acting from Washington and Morgan Freeman contributes to a classic watch all these years later.
