‘Angel' Sequel Sets Release Date After ‘Buffy' Reboot Cancellation

The Buffy universe is expanding once again.

While the TV version of the cult vampire franchise is still in limbo, following the cancellation of the Chloé Zhao-directed revival series, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, Dynamite Entertainment is expanding its comic adaptation to include an Angel series, following the recent announcement of an upcoming Buffy sequel series.

Back in April, Dynamite Entertainment announced a follow-up series chronicling Buffy's adventures beyond the original series finale in 2003, through the medium of comic books. The new series Kelly Thompson and Stephen Byrne-led series is set to launch on July 27.

This week, Dynamite confirmed a spin-off, focused on Angel, is in the works, after announcing the character, originally portrayed by David Boreanaz, would appear in Buffy's new comic book outing.

"Following the epic announcement of the return of Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics with Kelly Thompson at the helm, Dynamite is excited to announce the companion series that fans have been waiting for, as Angel kicks off this August by Thompson and artist Giulia Giacomino," a press release by Dynamite reads.

"Once the terrifying vampire known as Angelus, the man fans now know as Angel was cursed for his crimes with the return of his soul. His newfound humanity led him to the seemingly idyllic small town of Sunnydale, and a star-crossed love affair with the Slayer - Buffy Summers," the synopsis states. "Once the tragedy had run its course, Angel set off for new adventures (and his own show) in Los Angeles as a detective specializing in supernatural cases and helping the helpless."

"Things don't always go according to plan, however, and sometimes you do have to go home again. But what if in trying to set something right, chaos follows? This is that story."

As for the TV version of Buffy, things have been quiet on that front since Hulu announced it would not be going forward with the current version of the revival series, where Sarah Michelle Gellar was set to reprise her role as the titular vampire slayer. Reports circling the March 2026 announcement speculated that Hulu had only temporarily benched the sequel series to retool the story, but no major update has been given since then
