Netflix Comedy Drops 63% in Viewership, But Cancellation Isn't Certain

In yet another example of a Netflix show facing staggering viewership in its second season, The Four Seasons is left with its future hanging in the balance, with renewal not guaranteed.

The comedy-drama was co-created by Lang Fisher (Never Have I Ever), Tracey Wigfield (30 Rock), and Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live), who also stars in the series. Alongside Fey, the comedian is joined by Steve Carell (The Office, Little Miss Sunshine), Colman Domingo (Euphoria, Sing Sing), Will Forte (SNL, MacGruber), Kerri Kenney-Silver (Reno 911!, Superstore), Marco Calvani (You, Me & Tuscany), and Erika Henningsen (Hazbin Hotel).

The Four Seasons is based on the 1981 film of the same name, directed by and starring comedy legend Alan Alda, who makes a cameo in the Netflix adaptation. Per its official logline, the show follows "the decades-long friendship between three married couples," which "is tested when one divorces, complicating their tradition of quarterly weekend getaways."

According to data accumulated by What's on Netflix, Season 2 of The Four Seasons, which premiered on May 28, saw a steep decline of 63% in viewership, compared to the first week performance of Season 1. The Netflix news outlet remained optimistic about its chances of renewal, however, pointing to other Netflix shows like Nobody Wants This and Running Point as other recent shows that saw a drop in first week views and got renewed - although neither were as severe as The Four Seasons' dip.

The Four Seasons is not alone in this recent phenomenon of acclaimed shows (Season 2 is currently sitting at 88% on Rotten Tomatoes) failing to bring in their original audiences when dropping new episodes. Recently, A Good Girl's Guide to Murder and Beef both struggled to recoup even a fraction of their first-week Season 1 viewership with Season 2, despite generally positive reviews all around.
