Seven Years Later, 'Devil May Cry 5' Is Winning Over Critics Again on Nintendo Switch 2
In 2019, Capcom released Devil May Cry 5, widely considered by many to be one of the greatest action games ever made for its creative and stylish combos, multiple playable characters, fast pace, and combat depth. Now, a port to the Nintendo Switch 2 is here, and it seems like fans may have yet another reason to go back to the game once again.
According to Metacritic, the Switch 2 version of Devil May Cry 5, called Devil May Cry 5Devil Hunter Edition, currently has an 85 metascore, with all critic reviews positive. Critics praise the game's port quality, with many comparing it directly with the expanded released, Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition, though this version does lack some of that releases additional features.
Devil May Cry 5 is the fifth mainline installment in the long-running Devil May Cry series. The games typically follow Dante, the Son of Sparda, a demon hunter. In Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, a prequel to the first game, Vergil, Dante's brother, made his first appearance, and he would remain one of the most popular action game characters for decades to come.
Vergil would become a playable character in Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition, and he is also playable in the new Devil May Cry 5 Devil Hunter Edition on Switch 2.
Devil May Cry 5 Devil Hunter Edition runs at 60 FPS in both docked and handheld modes, according to the game's posting on Nintendo's website. The game is also currently priced at $29.99 instead of $39.99 until July 31, 2026.
This new version of the game also includes a lot of the game's previously released DLC, including Vergil's campaign, new colors, Nero's Devil Breakers, and new battle music. This version of the game does not include Legendary Dark Knight mode or Turbo Mode.
Capcom has been pushing the Nintendo Switch 2 hard, releasing all of its 2026 games on the platform and porting older games to the hybrid device, and it looks like Devil May Cry 5 Hunter Edition may be another winner for the Switch 2 and Capcom.
Devil May Cry 5 Hunter Edition will be available on June 23, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2.
