Buffalo Trace Just Dropped Its Latest Set of Unicorn Whiskeys. Find Out How to Score One
During Prohibition, if you wanted a bottle of whiskey from Colonel Albert B. Blanton's famous George T. Stagg Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, you first needed to go to your doctor and get a prescription. During the famously dry period only a handful of distilleries were allowed to bottle special pints of so-called medicinal whiskey.
Ultimately, so many people had conditions that needed "treatment" the government even was forced to declare a distillers holiday that allowed a few brands to replenish their dwindling stocks of whiskey. George T. Stagg bottled a wide range of medicine whiskey brands, which came in eye-catching and full-color cardboard boxes.
Colonel Blanton is now, of course immortalized, with the eponymous single barrel bourbon brand that has become one of the most sought-after whiskeys on Earth. And his distillery is now known as Buffalo Trace, which produces an incredible portfolio that includes the aforementioned Blanton's, Weller, Stagg and, of course, Pappy Van Winkle.
Fortunately, you now no longer need to have a prescription to buy a bottle of whiskey from Buffalo Trace but each year the brand produces a limited-edition set of whiskeys that are a throwback to Prohibition. The third release of the so-called Prohibition Collection just was announced today and includes five vintage-looking 375 ml bottles of Henry Watterson, Kentucky River, John G. Carlisle, Walter B. Duffy and Cove Spring whiskey. While none of these brands are famous today, they each honor a historically significant person, event or place. They also were all actually sold during Prohibition by the George T. Stagg Distillery.
"The Prohibition Collection gives us the opportunity to bring important chapters of our Distillery's history back to life," said Buffalo Trace Distillery Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley in a prepared statement. "Each year, we uncover stories, brands and whiskey traditions that might otherwise have been lost to time. By reimagining these historic whiskeys, we honor the resilience, ingenuity and determination that carried this Distillery through one of the most challenging periods in American whiskey history and helped shape the legacy we continue today."
Prohibition Collection Price & Availability
The Prohibition Collection has a suggested retail price of $1,000 and comes in a wooden display box. It will be available at select retailers across the country. If previous editions of the collection are any indication, if you're able to track down one of these sets will sell for several times the suggested retail price.
