A true pioneer of the metal genre, Ronnie James Dio would have celebrated his 84th birthday today. The legendary vocalist paved the way for metal singing with his iconic stage presence and incredible body of work, fronting iconic bands such as Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and Dio.

Dio influenced more than just vocals, as he is often credited with originating the legendary "devil horns" gesture that has become synonymous with rock and heavy metal. Over the years, Dio has seen massive amounts of acclaim, with him being named the "best metal singer" at the 2010 Revolver Golden Gods Awards, and ranked as the greatest metal singer by journalist Sacha Jenkins in the "Merciless Book of Metal Lists."

Dio unfortunately passed away from stomach cancer in 2010. This tragedy has turned into some triumph however, as the Dio Cancer Fund was founded in his honor to raise money for those in the same situation he was. Today, the foundation wished a happy birthday to their namesake.
