Matt Haig has once again found himself on one of readers' must-read lists.

His latest novel, The Midnight Train, is currently ranked among Goodreads' most-read books, a list that reflects the titles readers are actively marking as finished on the platform. The recognition is the latest sign that Haig's newest release has quickly become one of the year's biggest literary successes.

Haig has built a devoted global following by blending imaginative storytelling with deeply human themes. Over the past decade, novels such as The Midnight Library, How to Stop Time and The Life Impossible have resonated with millions of readers through their thoughtful explorations of hope, loss, second chances and what it means to live a meaningful life.

The Midnight Train, released in May 2026, continues that tradition.

The novel follows another emotionally driven journey that combines elements of contemporary fiction with Haig's signature touch of magical realism, inviting readers to reflect on the choices that shape their lives while delivering an engaging, character-focused story. As with many of his previous works, the book balances uplifting moments with introspective questions about identity, resilience and connection.

"A part of me was never completely satisfied with the messaging of The Midnight Library," Haig told The Wall Street Journal. "I stand by it as a novel, but I felt like the way it was interpreted was like, 'Fine, yes, it's a novel about acceptance and the grass not being always greener.' And we need to hear all those things. But there's another part of me that sometimes thinks: If we could live our life with the perspective of our last days, how would we live it differently? This book, in a very, very subtle way, is having an argument with The Midnight Library a little bit, or at least completing the picture."

Readers have responded enthusiastically.

Since its release, The Midnight Train has generated strong word-of-mouth across book clubs, social media and online reading communities, where fans have praised its emotional storytelling and memorable characters. That momentum has helped propel the novel onto Goodreads' list of the platform's most-read books, reflecting the large number of readers actively finishing and discussing it.

The ranking also reinforces Haig's remarkable consistency as a bestselling author. His books have become regular fixtures on bestseller lists around the world, with The Midnight Library in particular introducing millions of readers to his distinctive style and helping cement his reputation as one of today's most popular contemporary novelists.

"Novels are one of the few spaces we have in cultural life where you can totally disconnect and enter a different kind of reflective space," Haig told Rest Less. "And I think that it really is a medium that suits older people, both readers and creators, because it's reflective in its nature."

As The Midnight Train continues to rank among Goodreads' most-read books, it is clear that Haig's storytelling remains as compelling as ever. For longtime fans and first-time readers alike, the novel represents another memorable chapter in the career of an author whose books continue to spark conversation long after the final page.
