NEW YEAR’S EVE | Here’s what’s closed in the Valley and what’s open

Some restaurants, businesses and offices in the Mahoning Valley are closing their doors for New Year’s Eve weekend, to take coronavirus health precautions for their staff and patrons or due to staffing issues.

But many more are remaining open with special menus or other offers.

The Ohio Department of Health on Wednesday reported a new all-time record of 20,320 new COVID-19 cases in a single day. More than 1,000 new cases were reported among Valley counties Thursday — also an all-time high.

The Federal bar and restaurant along West Federal Street in downtown Youngstown will not be open for New Year’s Eve celebrations due to the rapid spread of COVID-19 in the Valley, and its impact on staff and patrons, the business said in a Facebook announcement.

The business hosted its Miracle on Federal Christmas pop-up bar from Dec. 9 to Dec. 29, featuring “over-the-top decorations, festive cocktails, Christmas beers, and a special menu featuring local holiday favorites,” a social media post said.

“While we are disappointed to end the Miracle on Federal this way, the health and well-being of our community is our top priority,” the business said in a post.

The business did not announce a reopening date.

Michael Alberini’s Restaurant and Wine Shop along Boardman Poland Road in Boardman also announced on social media its closure over the holiday weekend, caused by COVID-related staffing shortages. The restaurant expects to reopen at full capacity on Tuesday.

Aqua Pazzo Restaurant along McClurg Road in Boardman also announced on social media it would be closed Thursday and Friday, New Year’s Eve — also due to COVID-19 related staffing shortages.

“We will not be gone for very long,” reads a Facebook post. “We tried every possible way to get through the next few days, but found it an impossible task. What’s important now is keeping one another healthy so we can reopen sometime next week.”

Village halls in Wellsville and Lisbon, Columbiana County, will also be closed until further notice as a COVID-19 precaution, village officials announced earlier this week.

Lisbon residents can still pay their water bills over the phone, by leaving them in the dropbox outside the hall or visiting the Discount Drug Mart along State Route 45. For zoning permits, tax questions or other issues, call the hall at 330-424-5503.

Wellsville residents can drop off sewer payments in the dropbox outside the hall. Meetings with village officials are now by appointment only.
