Your Weekend Matters | Memorial Day observances in the Valley
Here are some of the events happening around the Mahoning Valley this weekend. For more events, check out our Events Calendar.
Monday is Memorial Day, and individuals and organizations around the Valley will be honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.
Boardman Township will host its 118th annual Memorial Day remembrance Monday, with a parade and service to “honor those who have served, are serving and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice while in military service to our country,” a news release states.
The parade and service is presented by the Kiwanis Club of Boardman-Youngstown and Boardman Township Park.
Before the parade, there will be a Memorial Mile race at 9 a.m. Applications can be picked up at Walgreens, the YMCA and Second Sole in Boardman.
The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at Boardman Center Intermediate School and proceed north along Route 7 to the Route 224 intersection. It will then proceed east along Route 224 to Boardman Township Park.
A service will begin at about 11 a.m. at the Maag Outdoor Amphitheater at the park. James Guterba, a Vietnam War veteran and retired Boardman Local Schools teacher, will be the keynote speaker.
Here are other observances taking place around the Valley on Monday:
Austintown Memorial Day Parade: Starts at 10 a.m. at Marc’s, 4755 Mahoning Ave. Ends with a noon ceremony at Austintown Fitch High School, 4560 Falcon Drive;
Brookfield Township Memorial Day Procession: Starts at 10 a.m. along Grove Street, then travels west to state Route 7, then south along state Route 7, ending at Brookfield Township Cemetery. A ceremony and luncheon will follow;
Champion Memorial Day Parade: Starts at 9 a.m. at Champion Township Cemetery, 149 Center St. The Rotary Club of Champion event also includes music and a service;
Mercer Memorial Day 500: Starts at 9 a.m. with the Jason Michaels Memorial 5K. The honoree ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Mercer County Courthouse, 5 Ct. House. The parade begins at 11 a.m.;
Niles City Cemetery Memorial Day Service: Starts at 11 a.m. at Niles Union Cemetery, 1213 Niles Cortland Road. The American Legion Post No. 106 will conduct the services. Niles veterans will be in attendance;
Lowellville Memorial Day Program: Starts at 10 a.m. at Holy Rosary Cemetery, 2790 Lehigh Lane. The program includes keynote speakers, the mayor, a rifle squad, a funeral march and more;
Warren Memorial Day Parade: Starts at 10 a.m. in downtown Warren. Each unit will be decorated with a patriotic theme.
Brothers Osborne to perform at Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre
Country music duo the Brothers Osborne will bring their “We’re Not For Everyone” tour to the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre at 8 p.m. Friday.
Tickets, ranging in price from $35.50 to $68, can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com and the Southwoods Health Box Office inside the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St.
The duo has been nominated for nine Grammy Awards and won for Best Country Duo/Group Performance in 2022. Their hits include “Stay a Little Longer,” “It Ain’t My Fault,” “Shoot Me Straight” and “All Night.”
Youngstown Playhouse to present ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’
“The Hunchback of Notre Dame” will open this weekend at The Youngstown Playhouse.
The show, based on the Victor Hugo novel and Disney film, will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday, and June 3 and 4, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday and June 5.
“The Hunchback of Notre Dame” tells the story of Quasimodo, the bell-ringer of Notre Dame, who escapes his captivity for a day and meets Esmeralda, a free-spirited Romani dancer who inspires him to discover his humanity, passion and courage.
Tickets, which are $18; $15 for seniors, students and military members; and $10 per ticket for groups of 10 or more can be purchased here or by calling the box office at 330-788-8739.
Heart, Springsteen tribute bands to perform in Warren
River Rock at the Amp will host tributes to Heart and Bruce Springsteen on Saturday.
Jersey, a seven-piece band that performs music from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, will take the stage at the Warren Community Amphitheatre, 321 Mahoning Ave. NW, at 5:30 p.m.
Straight On will bring the music of Heart to the stage at 8:30 p.m.
Tickets, which are $8 and free for children 12 and younger, can be purchased here and at the gate.
JCC of Youngstown to open Logan Campus on Saturday
The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown will open its Logan Campus for the summer on Saturday.
The outdoor campus, 3245 Logan Way, offers a variety of options for JCC members and their guests, including sand volleyball, tennis and basketball courts; an outdoor pool; and a snack shack, a news release states.
Family nights and adult nights will return this year, and trivia nights have been added. Live music will be provided once a month. S’mores will be available at 7 p.m. every Saturday.
Membership to the JCC includes both the Main Campus at 505 Gypsy Lane and Logan Campus. Membership information can be found here.
Concert to honor musical legacy of Michael Stanley
Jonah Koslen, Tommy Dobeck and Michael Weber will join members of The Resonators in celebrating the legacy of Michael Stanley during a performance at Robins Theatre in Warren at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
Guitarist Koslen and drummer Dobeck helped form The Michael Stanley Band in 1974.
Weber is a northeast Ohio-based guitarist, record producer and winner of MTV’s “Amazingness” television show, a news release states.
Youngstown-based band The Vindys will open the show.
Tickets, ranging in price from $37.50 to $69.00, can be purchased here and at the Robins Theatre Box Office, 160 E. Market St.
A portion of every ticket sold will be donated to the newly formed 10,000 Watts of Holy Light Fund of The Cleveland Foundation, the release states.
Midwest Holiday Antique Show set for Sunday in Canfield
The Midwest Holiday Antique Show is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Canfield Fairgrounds, 7265 Columbiana Canfield Road.
The show will feature vintage, antique holiday decorations. Find treasures from 1800 to the 1960s for Halloween, Easter and Valentine’s Day, or even toys that can be found under the Christmas tree.

The event benefits the Library’s Carol A. Bacon Literary Society Fund and the Martha Muransky Children’s Literacy Fund. Tickets are $50 and include appetizers, summer fare, a glass of wine, cash bar and raffles. Musical entertainment will be provided by J & J Jazz.
