WEEKEND MATTERS | Boardman Park to celebrate 75th anniversary with Birthday Party Bash

The big ticket this weekend: Summer might be winding down, but there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy outdoor events with family and friends. One such event will take place in Boardman this weekend.
Boardman Park will celebrate its 75th anniversary with a free Birthday Party Bash on Saturday.
Festivities will begin at the Maag Theatre, where Rock Radio will perform at 5 p.m., followed by Rudy & The Professionals at 7:30 p.m.
The celebration will also feature wagon rides, a bounce house, an obstacle course, a “touch-a-truck,” free hot dogs and cake (while supplies last) and fireworks.

FIRST LIVE SHOW: Penguin City Brewing Co., 460 E. Federal St., Youngstown, will host its first live show in its taproom Friday. The Labra Brothers, Rolling Boxcar International and Community Shoe will perform starting at 8:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here for $10 in advance, or $15 at the door.
TRIBUTE SHOW: Neil Young tribute band Harvest and Led Zeppelin tribute band ZOSO will perform at River Rock at the Amp on Saturday. Harvest will take the stage at the Warren Community Amphitheatre, 321 Mahoning Ave. NW, at 5:30 p.m. ZOSO will perform at 8:30 p.m. Tickets, which can be purchased at the gates, are $10. Children 12 and younger are admitted free.
SHAKER WOODS: The 41st annual Shaker Woods Festival concludes this weekend. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 44337 Countyline Road, Columbiana. The arts and crafts festival features food, music, hand-thrown pottery, blown glass, custom jewelry, handmade furniture, handmade soaps and sanitizers and more. The entertainment schedule can be viewed here. Admission is $10 per day and free for children age 12 and younger.
PANERATHON: The annual Panerathon fundraiser to benefit the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center will take place at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St., Youngstown. Online registration is closed, but you can still sign up at the event. Registration opens at 8 a.m. The 10K, 2-mile walk, fun run will also feature activities for children. JAZZ IN THE PARK: Vonn James will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday at Wick Park, 260 Park Ave., Youngstown. The concert is part of the Jazz in the Park concert series.

POP-UP LIBRARY: The Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County’s Pop-Up Library will make a stop at Lynn Park, 1940 Lynn Ave., Youngstown, from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday.
CANFIELD FAIR: The 176th Canfield Fair will get underway Wednesday. Gates will open at 8 a.m. Admission prices for the fair, which runs through Monday, can be found here. A daily program can be viewed and downloaded here.
B&O NIGHT MARKET: The B&O Station, 530 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, will host the B&O Night Market from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. The market features local produce, locally made baked goods, local art, beer and music.

STORYTELLERS: Stage Left Community Arts Center is accepting submissions from local storytellers for its Nov. 12 SPARK Storytelling event and registration for its Sep. 11-Oct. 16 Youth Storytellers Workshop in Lisbon. AUDITIONS: The Stambaugh Youth Concert Band will have auditions for wind, brass and percussion students from 5 to 9 p.m. Sept. 6 and 13 in the Concert Hall and the Anne K. Christman Hall at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave., Youngstown. More information is available here.
POOCH PENTATHLON: The YMCA of Youngstown will host its Pooch Pentathlon from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Davis Family YMCA, 45 McClurg Road, Boardman. Registration is required and is $5 per dog, which includes a “doggie bag” of goodies for the first 60 dogs registered. The fee will increase to $10 per dog after Sept. 1.
