WEEKEND MATTERS | Youngstown Oktoberfest set for Saturday

Here are some of the events happening around the Mahoning Valley this weekend. For more events, check out our Events Calendar.

The big ticket

The inaugural Youngstown Oktoberfest will take place downtown Saturday.

Festivities will get underway with the Family Oktoberfest on Phelps Street from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be games for children, treats, face painting, a pretzel toss, a five-piece polka band, a painting demonstration, prizes, fire dancers and more, a news release states. The all-ages event is free.

Adult festivities will also begin at 4 p.m. Stop by any of the participating businesses to pick up a free Oktoberfest passport.

  • Concert and fundraiser: The Night Out For Neighborhoods concert and fundraiser will take place Friday at the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre, 201 S. Phelps St., Youngstown. Gates will open at 6:30 p.m., and 76 Degrees West will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $10 and can be purchased here and at the Southwoods Health Box Office at the Covelli Centre. Proceeds will benefit Youngstown’s community groups, block watches and neighborhood associations, a news release states. When purchasing tickets, you can select which group to support.
  • Teal Together: The Rose Mary Flanagan Ovarian Cancer Foundation will host its third annual Teal Together 5K run and 1-mile walk Saturday at Boardman Township Park. Survivors will be acknowledged at 8:40 a.m., and the race/walk will begin at 9 a.m. You can register here or in person at the event. Sign-in begins at 7:30 a.m.
  • Tour of Poland homes: The Poland Historical Society will have a tour of six 19th-century homes in the village from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $20, and proceeds will go toward the historical society’s efforts to preserve the village’s history, providing educational programs and maintaining the Little Red Schoolhouse. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Aebischer’s Jewelry, 68 S. Main St.; Consign & Design, 11 W. McKinley Way; and The Flower Loft, 101 S. Main St. Tickets will be available at the Village Town Hall and Little Red Schoolhouse on Saturday.
  • The Bike Show: Rust Belt Revival will host The Bike Show from 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday at The Soap Gallery, 117 S. Champion St., Youngstown. A selection of motorcycles will be on display in the gallery, and a charity auction will feature custom-painted helmets. Food and drinks will be available.
  • ‘Historic Barns of Ohio’: Author and artist Robert Kroeger will discuss his book “Historic Barns of Ohio” at 10 a.m. Saturday in the meeting room at Denny’s, 4020 Belmont Ave., Liberty. The discussion is part of the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society’s Memories of a Lifetime series. Admission is $5 for members and $10 for nonmembers. Refreshments and live entertainment will be provided, and a 50/50 raffle will benefit the historical society’s education mission, a news release states.   • Silly Science Sunday: OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology will host its 12th annual Silly Science Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Central Square and a portion of West Federal Street in downtown Youngstown. The event will feature hands-on activities, exhibitors and stage shows, all related to science, technology, reading, engineering, art and mathematics, a news release states. There will also be exhibitors and food vendors.
  • Bike tour: The Out-Spokin’ Wheelmen bicycling club will host its 49th Northeast Ohio Century tour Sunday. The event is based at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds Banquet Center, 899 Everett Hull Road, Cortland. Participants can choose a 25-mile Western Reserve Greenway bike trail route or a 50-, 62-, 75- or 100-mile option. All routes are loops that begin and end at the banquet center, where cyclists can enjoy refreshments and lunch breaks, a news release states. A hot lunch and all-you-can-eat homemade cookies are included in the ride fee, which is $30 here or $35 on the day of the tour. Registration and check-in will take place from 7 to 11 a.m. Sunday at the banquet center.

  • Service appreciation: It’s Service Industry Night from 5 to 11 p.m. Monday at Vintage Estate Wine & Beer, 7317 South Ave., Boardman. The evening features 20% off drafts, wine (by the glass) and food for all service industry personnel. A recent pay stub is required.
  • Ghost sighting: Swedish rock band Ghost will bring its eccentric on-stage show to the Covelli Centre at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Mastodon and Spiritbox will also perform. Tickets, ranging in price from $59.50 to $99.50, can be purchased here and the Southwoods Health Box Office inside the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St., Youngstown.
  • Tony Hawk lecture: Professional skateboarder and entrepreneur Tony Hawk will speak at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave., Youngstown, at 7 p.m. Wednesday as part of Youngstown State University’s Thomas Colloquium on Free Enterprise lecture series. Tickets are available here. The presentation will also be livestreamed on YSU’s YouTube channel.
  • Money talk: Joe “The Coupon Guy” will talk about saving money at the Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St., at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. He appears on “Good Morning Cleveland” on Saturday mornings and can be heard on the radio on 1330 AM on Wednesdays. To register, visit the library’s website or call 330-332-0042.
  • ‘Off the Rails’ comedy: Stand-up comedian Lewis Black will bring his “Off the Rails” tour to Packard Music Hall in Warren at 8 p.m. Thursday. Tickets, ranging in price from $38 to $88, can be purchased here and at the Packard Music Hall Box Office, 1703 Mahoning Ave. NW.

Other matters

  • Preparing for exhibit: The first floor period rooms at the Arms Family Museum, 648 Wick Ave., Youngstown, are closed as the Mahoning Valley Historical Society prepares for the 14th “Memories of Christmas Past” exhibit, a news release states. The first floor will be closed until the exhibit opens Nov. 19. During the closure, admission will be half-price at the museum and the Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St. The museum will close entirely from Nov. 1 through Nov. 18.
  • Sensory friendly Sundays: The Paul and Yetta Gluck School of Visual Arts at the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown, 505 Gypsy Lane, is offering sensory friendly Sundays from 4 to 5 p.m. this Sunday, Oct. 23, Nov. 20 and Dec. 18. Participants will explore the world of visual arts with instructor Nina Battaglia, a news release states. Each month, Battaglia will provide an art project in a calm and soothing environment. Additional accommodations are available based on need. The cost is $10 per person. Register here.
