Boardman students, staff mark Global Youth Service Day with painting project

BOARDMAN — Students and staff at Glenwood Junior High School are using grant funding for a Global Youth Service Day project aimed at transforming their own school.
There are nearly 100 brown outside panels between the windows at the school that have lost their luster — some have been damaged by woodpeckers, and other areas were worn by weather. Students and staff are painting the panels and bringing them back to their original maroon color. The majority of the painting will take place Thursday and Friday.
“A group of staff will be taping off and prepping the panels to be painted over the next two weeks,” Laura Frost, Student Leadership advisor, said in a news release. “We’ve finished one panel and painted it, and the vibrant maroon really stands out.”
Frost applied for a ServeOhio Global Youth Service Day grant that will reimburse the school for $1,992 in paint and supplies. Private and federal funds for the grant are provided through the Ohio Commission on Service and Volunteerism.
Global Youth Service Day is the largest youth service and civic action event in the world. Activities are organized in more than 100 countries each April and engage millions, making it the largest annual celebration of young volunteers, the release states.
