COLUMBUS — According to the latest figures today from the Ohio Department of Health, the state is reporting 5,148 cases of the new coronavirus, or COVID-19 — 366 more than reported Tuesday.

Statewide, 1,495 people have been hospitalized, 472 of whom were placed in intensive care units.

There are 305 confirmed cases in Mahoning County; 126 in Trumbull; and 71 in Columbiana.

Statewide, there have been 193 deaths, including 28 in Mahoning County; 8 in Trumbull; and 6 in Columbiana.

Mahoning County's 28 reported COVID-19 deaths are again the highest among all Ohio's 88 counties, behind Cuyahoga County — which is reporting 960 total cases and 23 deaths — and its confirmed cases remain the fifth-highest in the state, according to the state's COVID-19 dashboard, which presents confirmed cases, hospitalizations and deaths in each county.

With Mahoning County's estimated population of 228,683 people and 305 confirmed cases as of Thursday, that's one case of the virus for about every 750 people.

According to a Wednesday afternoon release from Mahoning County Public Health, of those 28 deaths, 43 percent were living in long-term care facilities such as nursing homes. On Tuesday, 29 percent of the county's total deaths were in nursing homes, health officials reported.

Nearly all of the reported COVID-19 deaths in the county were patients with underlying health conditions, or 96 percent, the county reported.

The county health department noted the county's number of deaths is according to the date each death was reported, rather than the date the patient died. This indicates a delay in death notifications, rather than the number of people who have died in the last 24 hours.

Of Mahoning County's 305 confirmed cases, 43 percent are patients who are at least 80 years or older; 42 percent are patients between 60 and 79 years old; and 15 percent are younger than 60. Their ages range from 13 to 99 years old, with a median age of 61 years old.

Fifty-three percent of those total cases are men; 47 percent are women.

Of the 138 people who've been hospitalized, 50 percent are between 60 and 79 years old; 26 percent are younger than 60; and 24 percent are 80 years or older. Their ages range from 23 to 99 years old, with a median age of 69.
