BUSINESS UPDATES | Chamber Foundation raises $5,000 for United Way

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber Foundation helped raise $5,000 for the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley through a fundraising event last month.

The Chamber Foundation hosted a VIP fundraiser with Tammy Whitworth, Window World chairwoman and CEO, when she came to the Valley to keynote the chamber's Athena Award Dinner on May 13.

The Chamber Foundation's VIP fundraiser also generated money for the chamber's economic

development efforts. Assisting with the fundraiser were sponsors Window World, Muransky Companies, ONE Health Ohio, Premier Bank, Blair & Latell and MS Consultants.

ACCESS awarded $200,000 grant for local school project

BOARDMAN — The Area Cooperative Computerized Educational Service System has been awarded a $200,000 grant to increase broadband access and connectivity at United Local Schools.

The funds, which were made available by BroadbandOhio, will be used to extend the ACCESS fiber network at United Local Schools, connecting to a Private LTE network installed in Hanoverton. The Private LTE network will provide low-cost, broadband access and equipment to families living in the area, a news release states.

If the project is successful, the Private LTE model can be expanded to other school districts and communities throughout the ACCESS territory covering Mahoning and Columbiana counties, the release states.

ACCESS expects construction on the network to begin soon and hopes to have it completed before the start of the 2021-22 school year.

ACCESS, 493 Bev Road, is one of 18 governmental computer service organizations serving more than 1,000 educational entities and more than 1.5 million students in Ohio.

Regional chamber to host Washington, D.C. Fly-In

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber will host its fourth annual Washington, D.C. Fly-In at 8 a.m. Thursday to promote an exchange of ideas between federal officials and the Valley's leaders.

This year's Fly-In will be a hybrid event. The day will consist of 50 to 60 Valley business and community leaders holding a series of meetings with federal policymakers.

This year's priorities include protecting and growing the Youngstown Air Reserve Station, one of the Valley's largest employers, and a RAISE grant for the Lordstown/North Jackson Logistics Hub.

Meetings will take place with Brig. Gen. William Kountz; U.S. Sens. Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown; U.S. Reps. Tim Ryan, Bill Johnson and Marcy Kaptur; and others.
