YBI portfolio company Freshmade 3D's assets acquired
YOUNGSTOWN — ExOne, an industrial 3D-printing company based in the Pittsburgh area, is expanding its presence in Ohio with the acquisition of the assets of Freshmade 3D, a 5-year-old startup portfolio company of the Youngstown Business Incubator.
Freshmade 3D patented a method of creating durable AMClad tooling out of sand forms 3D printed on ExOne machines. The process reduces development time for the production of conventional tooling and offers customers up to 50 percent in cost savings, a news release states.
ExOne CEO John Hartner said in a release that the company will scale up Freshmade 3D’s patented process for a global aerospace customer, which plans to use it for the composite layup of parts — a way to “shorten supply chains and produce tooling and final products locally.”
Freshmade 3D has used its AMClad process to produce artwork or restoration pieces, including a replica of the Statue of Liberty’s Italian sister — the Liberty of Poetry — which was featured at Ellis Island and is now at Kent State University.
