YOUNGSTOWN — Penguin City Brewing Co. is getting a shot of positive energy.

The brewery is getting its first tenant, DOPE Cider House & Winery, which is leasing a 1,000-square-foot production facility and tasting room housed next to Penguin' City's recently purchased warehouse at 460 E. Federal St.

Hannah Ferguson of Youngstown, an assistant brewer at Modern Methods Brewery in Warren and the only Black female brewer in Ohio, started DOPE (Dwelling On Positive Energy) Brands in 2017. She will be the head brewer at the cider house.

"This partnership with Hannah is a slam dunk. She told me she has been trying to find a place in Youngstown for over three years for her own business," Aspasia Lyras-Bernacki, co-owner of Penguin City, said in a news release. "When I showed her the space, I knew she found her dream spot. Our facility is more than Penguin City Beer; we are a part of the community, and we want to show that working together and helping each other out will build us all up and make our city stronger."

Penguin City will assist Ferguson with branding and will help distribute her products throughout the Mahoning Valley, and Ferguson will be assisting with brewing at Penguin City.

DOPE Cider House & Winery is scheduled to open along with Penguin City in late summer and plans to have eight ciders on tap and four varieties of wine.

"Honestly, this has been very emotional for me. I have been trying, unsuccessfully, for years to get my business going, and just when I felt like giving up, this opportunity presented itself," Ferguson said.
