Historical society to celebrate founding, Good Humor milestones
YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning Valley Historical Society this month is celebrating the 145th anniversary of its founding and its tie to the Good Humor Bar, which was invented by Youngstown native Harry Burt.
At noon on Thursday (Sept. 10), MVHS will debut a video program titled "Founders Day: Good Humor Tour" as part of its History To Go series. The video, which examines the centennial milestone of the creation of the Good Humor Bar, explores the stories and events that shaped the history of the treat from its origins to present-day ownership under Unilever. The video will be available on MVHS' YouTube channel.
Due to modifications made to this year's schedule, MVHS will not be charging any event fees for its History To Go series. However, the historical society is asking for online donations to help cover the costs for video production and planning. "Support This Event" buttons can be found on its History To Go page.
At noon Sept. 17, MVHS will present a Bites and Bits of History program titled "MVHS & Good Humor Anniversary Special." MVHS Executive Director Bill Lawson will explore the historical society's founding in 1875 and expand on Burt's business career and the development of the Good Humor Bar. Lawson also will highlight Burt's and Good Humor's connection to the building that houses Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St., one of the historical society's two locations. The other location is Arms Family Museum, 648 Wick Ave. The video will be available on MVHS' YouTube channel.
