YOUNGSTOWN — Leah Sakacs, lead organizer of the Senior Support Action Group, is this week’s honoree for the Women Warriors initiative.

The Guiding Circle of the Community Foundation’s Fund for Women and Girls selected Sakacs because of her commitment to local seniors and other immunocompromised individuals during the current health crisis, according to a news release. Sakacs spearheaded the creation of SSAG to rapidly respond to emerging needs. The group delivers food, medication and other supplies, as well as provides transportation to those who are homebound because of COVID-19.

Sakacs is also the coordinator of Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Mahoning and Trumbull Counties and works with several other local organizations.

Last week, Pastor Julia Wike was selected as the first Women Warriors honoree.

Women Warriors is a campaign that recognizes women who are stepping up to lead crisis relief and response efforts in the Mahoning Valley during the COVID-19 outbreak. Each week, the Fund’s Guiding Circle will select one woman from submitted nominations to spotlight.

Community members are encouraged to use the nomination form, which can be found here, to share stories of the women they see helping out locally.
