Mahoning County Public Health offers senior wellness classes

The programs assist with fall prevention and management of chronic pain.

AUSTINTOWN — Mahoning County Public Health, 50 Westchester Drive, is sponsoring two free wellness classes for seniors.

A Matter of Balance is a falls-prevention workshop that emphasizes strategies to reduce the fear of falling and increases activity levels.

During weekly two-hours sessions — 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. — participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors and exercise to increase strength and balance.

The workshop begins Feb. 6 and consists of eight weekly sessions, ending March 26.

Chronic Pain Self-Management is an educational program designed to help individuals age 60 and over with learning proven strategies to manage chronic pain. Classes are interactive, where mutual support and success helps build confidence in managing health and maintaining active and fulfilling lives.

The program consists of six weekly sessions, beginning Feb. 6 and ending March 12. The sessions are from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Davis Family YMCA, 45 McClurg Road, Boardman. Membership is not required.
