Meet the next Canfield superintendent tonight
[EDITOR'S NOTE — This story has been updated to clarify that Tim Myers announced his resignation as superintendent of Van Buren Local Schools in Hancock County earlier this year.]
CANFIELD — One of three candidates appearing live tonight on the Canfield Local School District's website and social media channels is expected to become the district's next superintendent.
The district is hosting a virtual "Meet the Finalists Night" for the three superintendent finalists — Joseph Knoll of Alliance, Tim Myers of Findlay and Timothy Saxton of Cortland — from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight, according to a release from the district.
The virtual forum will be streamed live on the district's YouTube channel, its website and other social media channels. The finalists will introduce themselves and take questions from community members.
Here's what we know about the finalists, according to their submitted resumes:
Joseph Knoll since 2012 has been the superintendent of Marlington Local Schools in Stark County, which operates on a nearly $23 million budget.
He created the district's Dukes Digital Academy online school, instituted new STEM initiatives such as clubs and a career-tech engineering program at the district's high school, and used a $300,000 local education grant to build a fabrication lab.
Knoll was also assistant superintendent and human resources director for the Mahoning County Educational Service Center from 2010 to 2012.
He holds a Master's degree in curriculum and instruction from Ashland University and a Bachelor's of science degree from Mount Union College.
Tim Myers earlier this year announced his resignation as superintendent of Van Buren Local Schools in Hancock County, a position he's held since 2004.
During that time, he reportedly improved test and report card scores in the district, balanced budgets through realignment of programs and staffing and wrote grants for new STEM, college preparedness and career learning programs.
Myers holds a Master's degree in education from University of Dayton and a Bachelor's degree in physical education and psychology from Morehead State University in Kentucky.
Timothy Saxton has served as superintendent of West Branch Local School District in Beloit since 2016, where he helped the district navigate the state's school improvement process and improve its state report card.
Before that, he headed up Brookfield Local School District for seven years, where he oversaw construction of a new $33 million school building and headed up a successful levy campaign that established a new $500,000 line of annual funding.
Saxton holds a Master's degree in education from Youngstown State University and a Bachelor's degree in education from Bowling Green State University.
The Canfield school board contracted with CF Educational Solutions of Middletown to assist in the search. A 15-member group of community members have also advised the board in the search.
The board intends to hire a new superintendent by the end of May.
