MINERAL RIDGE — Mahoning County officials on Friday symbolized the former Youngstown Developmental Center's transition to the Mahoning Valley Campus of Care.

The former center, a 35-acre campus for mental health and disabled care shuttered by the state in 2017, is expected to come back online by the end of the year, with numerous partnering local health care providers taking residence.

Some renovations are already underway, said Duane Piccirilli, executive director of the Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board.

After the county purchased the closed campus from the state in 2017, it had four years to fully assume ownership and develop a plan to reopen, otherwise it would revert back to the state.

In January, officials were still working to drum up $1.5 million in capital needed to revamp the property.

Piccirilli said many of the providers to whom the county will eventually turn over the property have been pitching in funds for renovation work. Alta Behavioral Healthcare is putting forth some of the $500,000 grant it received from the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, he said.

The project has also added one new nonprofit provider — Boundless, of Columbus, which will add 30 new jobs to the campus, Piccirilli said.
