Ohio unemployment claims exceed 180,000

State claims increase by nearly 30 times since last week; 3.3 million Americans filed for unemployment.

COLUMBUS — More than 180,000 Ohioans filed unemployment claims last week, as the state endured mass layoffs to prevent coronavirus spread.  

According to data from the U.S. Department of Labor, 187,784 filed for unemployment in the week that ended March 21. That number was 7,046 for the previous week.

Nearly 3.3 million Americans filed for unemployment last week, obliterating the previous record of 695,000 set in 1982.
