SMARTS offers 3 weeks of summer workshops
YOUNGSTOWN — SMARTS (Students Motivated by the Arts) has scheduled three weeks of "Everywhere Together" workshops beginning June 14.
SMARTS is a community-based art school, providing curriculum-focused programming in schools and out of schools for visual arts, music, dance, theater and creative writing.
The free workshops run Mondays-Thursdays through July 1.
Different workshops are available each week. There are 26 virtual and in-person workshops with 380 spots for students and families.
Some virtual offerings include a family workshop to create wonderful memories together with visual art, field workshops through Zoom from anywhere — backyards, Millcreek Park, baseball fields or anywhere else that sparks creativity.
The workshops will include virtual, on-site coaching for drawing, photography and more.
SMARTS also is offering limited in-person classes in its downtown facility. Among the subjects are scarf dancing, Impressionism acrylic painting, puppet theater, escape room writing and Lego sculptures.
Students may enroll in an unlimited number of Virtual SMARTS workshops, but only one in-person workshop for summer, due to limited seats for health and safety.
Those taking in-person classes at SMARTS will need to comply with SMARTS health safety policy, including wearing masks, washing hands and social distancing. Classroom spaces will be sanitized between workshops.
"After a difficult year students are looking to reconnect, build friendships, and use their creativity to make art that expresses the experiences they had," said Lindsay Goossens, SMARTS education director in a news release. "Summer workshops at SMARTS are always a great start to having a creative fun summer. Now more than ever, students need this creative outlet."
