Churches, synagogues and other religious institutions have shuttered across the Mahoning Valley as the region mobilizes to slow the spread of the new coronavirus.

Though religious institutions are not included in Ohio's ban on gatherings and stay-at-home order, most have voluntarily closed for services and some are now offering streaming services so people can worship from home. Gov. Mike DeWine appealed to churches again this weekend to avoid offering in-person services, as some continue to do so.

"We’re not going to tell you not to do it but it really is not a wise thing. ... It’s a very real risk not only to your members but to everyone else in the community," he said.
