Vienna, Cortland fire departments receive federal funds

WARREN — The Cortland and Vienna Township fire departments are among the five communities in Ohio's 13th District receiving federal grants.

The awards are part of the 2020 Assistance to Firefighters Grant, according to a news release from U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Howland.

The program provides funds for critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

In all, Ryan's district received more than $1.1 million. Vienna Township will receive $141,204.76 and Cortland $54,181.82 to be used for opertions and safety.

Also receiving funds were Alliance, $54,761.90 for buying vehicles, as well as Akron ($699,909.09) and Coventry Township ($45,545.90) for operations and safety.

The goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and emergency medical service organizations.
