Virtual MLK events scheduled for Sunday, Monday

Mahoning Valley virtual events are planned for Sunday and Monday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

YOUNGSTOWN — The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Planning Committee of the Mahoning Valley will host virtual events on Sunday and Monday to commemorate the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. 

This year's theme is "Fifty-Three Years Later: Remembering What Is Civil; Doing What is Right." 

The annual worship service is scheduled for 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. The Rev. Michael Harrison, president of the Ohio Baptist State Convention, will speak. It can be viewed through this Zoom link.

The MLK Community workshop is set from 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Monday. The workshop offers sessions on criminal justice, health care and youth empowerment. It's available through this Zoom link.

Both events are free and open to the public, but the workshop requires pre-registration. For more information, call 330-747-2125.

Among the organizations supporting the committee are Youngstown State University, Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past, Mahoning Valley Historical Society and Mahoning Valley Association of Churches.

On Monday evening, Ursuline High School has planned a Dr. King memorial event to be staged prior to the boys basketball game against Saint Thomas Aquinas.

Keith Gunther, Ursuline head coach, will address the teams on the topic of race prior to the tip-off of the varsity game at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium. 

Following the game, a MLK Memorial MVP trophy will be presented to a player from each team. Players will receive an "I Have a Dream" t-shirt.
