WEEKLY COVID-19 TRENDS | Cases plateau; vaccines plunge

For the second week in a row, Ohio reported decreasing COVID-19 case numbers; the state's vaccine rate is falling much faster.

COLUMBUS — Ohio's COVID-19 case plateau appeared to hold steady last week.

For the second week in a row, the state reported decreasing COVID-19 case numbers. As a result, the state has moved closer to its reopening goal.

Gov. Mike DeWine promised the state can reopen when it reports 50 cases per 100,000 people over two weeks. Three weeks ago, the rate rose to 200 cases per 100,000 — four times the state goal. Last week, it decreased to 155.6 cases per 100,000.

While total new cases were down last week, other lagging indicators were up in Ohio over the previous week: new deaths (167) new hospitalizations (848) and new ICU admissions (94)

While Ohio's rate of new COVID-19 cases has slowed; statewide vaccine enthusiasm has fallen off a cliff.

Between March 28 and April 3, the state administered more than 460,000 first doses of the vaccine. Last week, only about 150,000 Ohioans received their first dose of the vaccine.

The Mahoning Valley's vaccine rollout mirrors state trends.

Mahoning Matters look at vaccination trends revealed that last week, Valley health officials administered fewer doses of the COVID-19 vaccine than they did the week of Jan. 17, when supply was extremely scarce.

April 25 to May 1 in numbers

  • 7,576 new confirmed cases were reported in Ohio; a total of 902,415 confirmed cases have been reported as of May 1.
  • There have been 848 new hospitalizations; a total of 56,489 people have been hospitalized as of May 1.
  • Between April 25 and May 1, 167 COVID-19 deaths were reported. The state reported 19,285 COVID-19 deaths in Ohio May 1.
  • Ohio is reporting 14,223 people have recovered from the virus between April 25 and May 1. The state reported  1,021,062 total recovered cases May 1.
  • As of May 1, 40.25 percent of the state population has received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. That's an increase of 155,312, down from 203,274 first doses the week before.

Ohio Public Health Advisory System map

Franklin County, home to Columbus, was downgraded from purple to red on the Ohio Public Health Advisory System map. Last week, 39 counties were orange, up from 33 the week before; four are yellow, up from two. The rest are red.

Columbiana County remained orange. Mahoning and Trumbull counties remained red and are both considered to have a high incidence of coronavirus spread. The number of new cases per capita has decreased for all three counties for the first time in several weeks.

  • Mahoning County reported 339 new cases, or 148 cases per 100,000 people, a decrease from 183 cases per 100,000 people last week;
  • Trumbull County reported 287 new cases, or 145 cases per 100,000 people, a decrease from 163 new cases per 100,000 people last week;
  • Columbiana County reported 127 new cases, or 125 cases per 100,000 people, a decrease from 133 cases per 100,000 people last week.

All three counties meet the indicators for new cases per capita and the proportion of new cases occurring outside group settings such as long-term care or correctional facilities.

Testing

  • The weekly volume of virus testing statewide steadily decreased since reaching an all-time peak on Nov. 25.
  • The seven-day moving average for positive tests was 3.8 percent on Thursday. That average reached an all-time low of 3 percent in early March and peaked last April 20 at 23.6 percent.

Vaccinations

  • As of Saturday, 4,704,420 Ohioans have started to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, including 91,163 in Mahoning County, 75,174 in Trumbull and 33,007 in Columbiana.
  • Statewide, 40.25 percent of Ohioans have started to receive the vaccine.
  • All three counties now trail the statewide rate:
    • Mahoning County: 39.86 percent
    • Trumbull County: 37.97 percent
    • Columbiana County: 32.4 percent
