YOUNGSTOWN — The first coronavirus pandemic "peak" seems to have occurred in Ohio at the end of April — the week between April 19 and 25 — when the state added 5,044 new cases in a week.

Until the beginning of July, that was the biggest increase in cases the state had experienced in a single week.

Last week, Ohio added nearly twice as many cases as during its April peak.

The state reported 9,356 new confirmed coronavirus cases between July 12 and 18. So far in July, the state has added 22,533 new cases.

Sunday marked the 12th day in a row the state added more than 1,000 new cases.

Hospitalizations are also on the rise.

So far, the most hospitalizations were added the week of April 5, when 853 additional Ohioans were hospitalizations for COVID-19. The state neared that number last week when 743 Ohioans were hospitalized with COVID-19. That's the highest increase in a single week since early April.

Throughout the pandemic, one-day hospitalization increases have surpassed 100 on 28 days; seven of those instances were in July. The state's largest one-day spike in hospitalizations was on May 5, when 166 new hospitalizations were reported.

The surge has thus far spared Mahoning County which is in Level 2 (orange) of the state's advisory alert system; Trumbull County, which was downgraded to Level 2, is experiencing smaller case increases.

On July 2 — almost two weeks after Mahoning Matters called for the data in Freedom of Information Act request to local health departments — Mahoning County Public Health provided a ZIP code breakdown of cases in the county. The department has been updating the county ZIP code map on a weekly basis. The most recent update was provided on July 17.

Over the last week, the largest increase in cases was seen in ZIP code 44512, which includes parts of Boardman. That ZIP code saw an increase of 47 cases; the week before, it only experienced an increase of 22 cases.

ZIP codes 44515 (Austintown) and 44514 (Poland) saw increases of 19 cases each.

The map has not updated death totals in the county; the toll remains at 235. According to the state's latest update Sunday, 241 Mahoning County residents have died of COVID-19.

The map shows only one ZIP code — 44509, the West Side of Youngstown — experienced an increase in total deaths last week. Per the county's update, one additional 44509 resident died.
