YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown City School District received about $33 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds, CEO Justin Jennings said Wednesday night.

Jennings provided an update of the funds during his monthly meeting. The district expects to receive about $50 million total for the third round of funding.

Jennings said the district plans to use the funds for summer enrichment programs for the next two years to make up for “learning loss.”

“We are being fiscally responsible with that money,” Jennings said.

A plan will be shared in the future so taxpayers can see how the district is spending the funds to impact classrooms in a positive way, Jennings said.

Some of the future plans for the funds include reimbursing the general fund, updating playgrounds and a community project.

“This money is not just the school's money, it’s the community’s money,” Jennings said, adding that the district is looking for more input on how the funds can be properly spent.
