YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University is planning a Virtual Commencement Ceremony on May 9 at 10 a.m. for graduating seniors.

YSU students eligible to graduate were notified on Sunday that the virtual ceremony is being planned to replace the traditional commencement ceremony.

"Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus pandemic, we will not be able to celebrate your graduation by gathering together in a tradition commencement ceremony," said Brien Smith, provost and vice president for academic affairs in an email.

Students were told they would receive more details soon.

"The virtual event will include many of the elements of our regular commencement, concluding with the scrolling of the names of all graduates, the formal moving of the tassel and the singing of our alma mater," Smith said in the email.

"While nothing can replace us coming together to celebrate, we are hopeful that this virtual experience will provide an opportunity for you to share this special day with family and friends."

YSU will continue its policy of mailing diplomas six-to-eight weeks after graduation. Students will receive tracking information when the diplomas are shipped.

For more information, students are advised to visit YSU's Commencement Website or email commencement@ysu.edu.
