YSU announces restructuring of academic programs
YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University announced a restructuring plan to help balance the university's budget, according to a release from Provost Brien Smith.
The plan reduces the number of academic colleges from six to five by combining the Beeghly College of Education and the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
The following programs will move to different colleges, according to Smith's memo:
- Forensic Sciences to College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
- Journalism to Education/Liberal Arts
- Early Childhood Associate's/Pre-K to Education/Liberal Arts
- Economics to Williamson College of Business Administration
- Communication to Williamson College of Business Administration
- Center for Human Service Development to Bitonte College of Health and Human Services
- Gerontology/Long Term Care Administration to Bitonte College of Health and Human Services
The changes are expected to save the university $1 million annually.
The initial plan was presented Thursday to the chairs and the executive committee of the Academic Senate, as well as the negotiating team for the YSU-OEA faculty union. It will be further discussed at the Board of Trustees meetings next week.
The announcement comes after news of budget cuts and an agreement with classified and professional administrative unions for furloughs and lack-of-work layoffs earlier this week. Moreover, YSU President Jim Tressel announced pay cuts for administrators.
