YSU bass trombonist offers virtual recital on Saturday

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University bass trombonist Zak Rahal will perform a virtual recital for the next McDonough Museum Honors Recital Series offering premiering Saturday.

The recital, available at 7 p.m., may be viewed on the McDonough Museum of Art and Cliffe College YouTube channels.

Rahal will perform music by Hidas, Brahms and Bach.

Rahal of Plymouth, Mich., is a YSU junior pursuing a  degree in Music Performance. Since coming to YSU, he has performed with the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and the Warren Philharmonic.

In high school, he was principal trombonist of the Detroit Symphony Youth Orchestra. In the summer of 2016, he was a member of the National Youth Orchestra 2 program run by Carnegie Hall during its inaugural season.

The series is a collaboration between the McDonough Museum of Art and the Dana School of Music where six students were selected as winners in the competition this semester.

  • Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. — Bin Peng, flute.
  • Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. — Kayla Gilmore, flute.
