YSU formally announces program cuts for fall 2022

Just hours before a protest rally today at Youngstown State University, Provost Brien Smith has released an official list of 26 academic programs that will be cut by the fall 2022 semester.

New students won't be accepted into the sunsetting programs, Smith said in a university-wide email sent out Tuesday, though the university remains "committed to the success" of the remaining students in those programs, Smith said.

Last week, YSU administrators notified the university's faculty union that they intended to begin reductions and announced 19 programs proposed for cuts. Departments may submit objections to Smith by Nov. 5, according to the email.

Listed below are the programs prepared to sunset by university administrators. Following each program name is the number of students enrolled in each program as of Nov. 1. Programs listed in bold are "teach-out" programs, meaning they were already sunset in a previous academic year:

Associate's Level

  • Electric Utility Technology: 11 students
  • Medical Laboratory Technology: 5 students
  • Emergency Medical Services: 1 student
  • Dietetic Technician: 0
  • Computer Information Systems A: 0
  • Medical assisting Technology: 3 students
  • Drafting and Design Technology: 0
  • Social Services Technology: 0

Bachelor's Level

  • Gerontology: 0
  • Italian Education: 3 students
  • Italian: 2 students
  • Manufacturing Engineering: 7 students
  • Religious Studies: 4 students
  • Music Theory: 1 student
  • Music History and Literature: 0
  • Family & Consumer Studies: 2 students
  • Computer Information Systems B: 12 students
  • Dance Management: 6 students
  • French: 0
  • Art History: 0

Master's Level

  • Music History and Literature: 0
  • Art Education: 0
  • American Studies: 7 students
  • Interdisciplinary Visual Arts: 2 students
  • Gerontology: 9 students

A "Rally to Save the NEOMFA at YSU" will be at noon today outside Todd Hall to present a petition to Smith, YSU President Jim Tressel and trustee members, to demand a meeting on the potential cut of the program.
