YOUNGSTOWN — The Simply Slavic committee this week announced that Braxton Jones is the winner of its $1,000 scholarship for 2021.

Jones, of Poland, is a junior at Youngstown State University and is majoring in computer science and electrical engineering. He is an active volunteer at the YSU Penguin Food Pantry, the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley and Potential Development. He is also an Eagle Scout and member of the Slavic Students Association at YSU.

Since 2012, Simply Slavic has presented a scholarship to YSU students with funds earned from its annual Simply Slavic Festival. Scholarship funds can be used for tuition, study materials or applied to study-abroad programs. Simply Slavic scholarship committee members select the winner after reviewing the applicants’ essays, academic achievement and involvement in Slavic cultural activities.

The annual Simply Slavic Festival was unable to be held downtown in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, but the festival will return June 17 and 18, 2022.

In addition to sponsorship and festival proceeds, the Simply Slavic scholarship is funded by Modern Methods Brewing Co. of Warren. A portion of the proceeds from sales of the festival's signature Rodina Lager are earmarked for this purpose every year, a news release states.
