BOARDMAN — The Train Station Fitness has teamed up with local health, wellness and fitness professionals to launch The YOU Project this month, a six-week program.

The program is aimed to "help you identify the best version of yourself and train lifestyle habits based around fitness, nutrition, mindset and overall wellness."

Youngstown native Angelo Babbaro opened The Train Station Fitness, 6001 Southern Blvd., five years ago. The gym focuses on building a fitness community that offers a variety of training programs, including CrossFit, sports performance, HIIT Ohio, personal training and nutrition coaching.

The YOU Project utilizes resources and guidance from a variety of local registered dieticians, medical professionals and health and wellness businesses with the common goal of keeping the Valley healthy.

According to The YOU Project’s event page, access into The YOU Project will include:

• Unlimited access to The Train Station and HIIT Ohio for six weeks;
• Habit based nutrition coaching for 6 weeks;
• Initial nutrition consultation (virtual or in-person);
• Weekly check-ins with your fitness and nutrition coaches;
• A nutrition app featuring a personalized meal plan, recipes and shopping lists;
• Fitness app to benchmark and measure performance, progress and results;
• Education including nutrition seminars, cooking classes and wellness tips;
• Members-only group for accountability and communication;
• Discounts from local health and wellness businesses including Prepped Wellness;
• Prizes for a variety of accomplishments.

Babbaro said many fitness facilities do a fitness program or challenge at the start of the new year, but in his opinion, most aren’t sustainable and lead to short term results.

“What we wanted to do is create something different, something that trained healthy, sustainable habits and not just focused on those restrictions,” he said. “So we're not just focusing on short term results in that six or eight week period, we really want to focus on that lifestyle change that you are going to be able to carry on for a long time.”

Babbaro told Mahoning Matters that when creating The YOU Project, he adopted the same philosophy that he runs The Train Station Fitness on: “We don't accomplish things individually … we do things collectively as a community.”

For Babbaro, The YOU Project is part of a wider initiative to combat Mahoning and Trumbull County’s low health rankings according to County Health Rankings, which ranks Trumbull County at 71 and Mahoning County at 72 out of Ohio’s 88 counties.

“We want to be able to better serve our community and that's not going to happen with some of these ‘get fit quick challenges,’” he said.

“How do we bind together collectively as a city, as fitness professionals, as health professionals, as medical professionals, and really help people change that lifestyle?” he added. “That's what the project is all about. [It is] really just creating a sustainable program, that we're all kind of in it together; you know, keeping Youngstown healthy.”

Joining The Train Station Fitness is not a requirement for the program, to cater to out of town participants and folks who already have a gym membership elsewhere.

Babbaro said the program can be done in-person or virtually, and, although registration is closed for January The YOU Project will continue in six-week intervals throughout the year.

The next rounds of The  YOU Project will take place on:

• Feb. 22 - April 4
• April 5 - May 16
• May 17 - June 27
• June 28 - Aug. 8
• August 9 - Sept. 19
• Sept. 20 - Oct. 31
• Nov. 1 - Dec. 12

Registration for round two will open Feb 1 at The You Project and begin on February 22nd. Pricing and registration options are still being determined.

“We see this is really a citywide movement, it's about bringing together the city of Youngstown to become healthier, and if we can do that, collectively and better serve our community,” Babbaro said. “We welcome other businesses to participate with us and get involved.”
